Whether its cloudy, sunny, partly cloudy and so forth, every single icon has been redesigned, giving it a new look.įor someone like me who is not always big on changes like apps that I use everyday, this is a design change I am completely on board with. This was great for its time, but with the new update, I now have access to six new types of weather screens.Īt this time, I have been using the new default screen because I like the refreshed look and that it gives me more data this time around, including when the sunset will come (specifically, what time), what the wind speed is going to be like and how much snow/rain I am projected to have that week.Īnother big part of this update is the weather condition icons. Previously in CARROT Weather, it only gave you options for one type of screen, which was the main weather screen where it gave you all of your weather data in the app. I have been a CARROT Weather user for at least a couple of years now and can say that this new update is quite the change, but in a good way.įirst of all, let’s talk about the design. It was quite the big week for apps because of Tweetbot also getting a big new updates with its sixth version of the app. Thumbs up on concept, thumbs down on implementation and integration with the current iPhone interface.A couple of weeks ago, CARROT Weather 5.0 was finally released to the public. I'm definitely not placing any new widgets on my main screens until I've got a clear 'path' arranged. The only upside is that I did do some housecleaning of older apps that had been squirreled away while putting things back in order. How the is it that Apple doesn't, or can't, seem to implement an 'undo' button for actions such as this? And why the hell is a widget destroying folders during a drag/move operation. and (pardon the yelling) PROCEEDED TO DUMP the contents of said folders right onto each screen, scattering all the apps from the newly destroyed and defunct folders hither and yon, and expanding my number of screens to 5! All randomly filled with the apps I had so lovingly organized. What happened is that all of the app folders along the trajectory of my drag dutifully swam out of the way. ![]() I figured there was no way to fit a medium sized widget on any of my three organized screens, so I got into edit mode, and dragged my selected medium sized widget past my 3 screens of apps and placed it on the waiting 'new' 4th screen. I can hit just about any app in less than 2 seconds with motion and sense memory by placement. The setup: On my iPhone I have 3 screens about 2/3rds full of 'folders' of organized apps. I finally gave in and gave the widgets a try. Which isn't completely useless this is essentially the same thing all the Apple-supplied widgets do, including Music, but it's still kind of disappointing since it's a solid downgrade from the capabilities of the older Notification Center widgets. ![]() This means that interactive widgets, like Overcast's now playing widget with play/pause controls, PCalc's calculator widget, or Dice's dice rolling widget are actually impossible to create in the new widget framework, because they need to perform actions in place in order to do anything useful (might as well just open the app otherwise).īasically, the only widget an app like Overcast (or Sonos, or Spotify) could provide would be something like a "suggested podcasts" or "most recently updated podcasts" widget- iOS 14 widgets are too limited to replicate the interactive Now Playing widget that Overcast provided on prior versions of iOS. (2) Widgets cannot perform actions when a user taps them, except to open the application itself (this can be a deep link directly to content if you want). But the OS schedules when a widget extension actually *runs* to determine what content appears, which limits the frequency at which a widget can actually update even if you're producing content for it very quickly. They can also update that timeline when a push notification comes in, or a network request completes, or on other events along those lines. Much like WatchOS complications, widgets provide a timeline of content to display over the course of the day. (1) Widgets don't update quickly enough for a "now playing"-style experience to be useable. Click to expand. There are two big issues for Overcast:
